Is It Really Natural Fertilizer?

With many people thinking about going green and beefing up their environmentally conscious ways, it seems only natural that landscaping considerations would come into the mix. Many people are opting for “organic” products verses traditional chemical products and other things of that sort. The problem is that not all that claims to be natural really is, and there may be some considerations here insofar as lawn care and fertilizers that you may need to think about. For instance, if a product is listed as “made with organic product” it is not likely to be one hundred percent. On the flip of that, there are products on the market that don’t even list themselves as being one hundred percent organic- but they are. This may all seem rather puzzling but it is another area that is simplified with a little understanding.

The best way that you can be sure that you are not only getting a quality fertilizer, but you are doing the best you can by the environment is to keep everything simple, in moderation. Consider that there are three types of fertilizer, these being synthetic, natural and organic- and sometimes, blends of the three, or two of the three. No matter what you use, as long as you are doing so in moderation, then you’re on the right track. Being mindful of how much you use, and taking care to follow the instructions and you’re probably doing right. Another hot tip when it comes to going green is to make sure that you are taking care of your lawn maintenance in other ways- this does have a direct impact on your fertilizer needs. If you are cutting it regularly, making sure it is well aerated, regularly but responsibly watered, your fertilizer needs will be cut down drastically.

Watering is an area where many people end up messing up a potentially good, green routine and making a need for more fertilizer. Most will water lightly and daily, and this doesn’t do much for your lawn in the first place, in the second place, a biweekly deep watering can benefit it greatly. Proper watering practices such as this have been proven to improve the health of the turf itself, which does result in less need for added nutrients. Core aeration is also a tremendously beneficial, twice yearly practice which can also cut down on your fertilizer in preventing your soil from compacting. It is a completely chemical free process which brings the soil core to the surface, bringing with it all of the nutrients, enzymes and other beneficial things that it holds.

On the whole, you can change up your fertilizer routine by changing up the overall way that you take care of your lawn. If you’re looking to go green, it may be a bit more simple than you think as you try to puzzle through the various types of fertilizers out there and figure out which would be best.
